Managing Audition Nerves Part IV: Maintain Creative Expression

Don’t Let Creative Expression Get Lost in the Weeds

Quick Take from Arts Advisory Board Member Dmitri Yevstifeev

Violist & violinist Dmitri Yevstifeev reminds students not to overlook the importance of musicality when preparing audition repertoire. This might seem obvious, but sometimes students can be so focused on learning the notes, runs, or double stops that they lose sight of the creative expression piece. Yevstifeev suggests students take time to listen to different professional musicians playing the pieces in their repertoire. Figure out what you like and don’t like about their varied approaches, and integrate this new knowledge into your vocabulary around a given piece. Feel the music and don’t be afraid to express yourself!
